Saying he wants to keep the dysfunction in national and state politics from "creeping" down to the local level, former GOP state Rep. Ron Reagan announced his bid Monday for the Manatee County Commission.

Reagan is seeking the District 1 seat held by Larry Bustle, who announced last week he will not run for reelection.

"We see the dysfunction in Washington spreading into Tallahassee," Reagan said in a press release. "It's imperative that we have leaders who keep it from creeping into our community. Our county government needs to work together for all who live here."

An insurance executive who served in the Florida House for eight years and rose to become the chamber's second highest-ranking member, Reagan is perhaps best known for pushing through a controversial law that allows local governments to use red light cameras to ticket motorists.
