The first-time politician beat incumbent Dave Sherman.

Anderson planned to vote Tuesday before boarding a late-afternoon flight to Maldives in the Indian Ocean to celebrate her 60th birthday. The retired attorney said she would check her emails during a 90-minute layover in Madrid to learn the election results.

“I want to thank the voters of Venice,” Anderson wrote in an email Tuesday morning in the event she won. “My husband and I are profoundly grateful for their support and encouragement. I look forward to working hard to keep in contact and represent them in the years ahead.”

Anderson’s husband, Don Anderson, ran against Sherman in 2011.

When quizzed about issues, Anderson criticized Sherman and his council record, in particular his appointments to advisory boards.

She said the city’s top issues are making sure the city has enough money for beach renourishment, especially in the event of a storm; traffic; and timeliness in issuing permits to residents and contractors.

The position pays $10,200 a year.
